Why is the Marae an important place in our community?
The marae is an important place in the community for the Maori people because it is a sacred place.
The marae is usually used as a place to hold the huis to discuss maori issues. People gather at the marae and the kaumatua leads the hui.
Sometimes the marae is also used for holding funeral services and memorial services for people who have died and they belong to that marae.
Homeless people also go to the marae to seek for food and shelter. It has also helped those people who had been sleeping in cars because they were pushed out of their homes.
People from different communities sometimes use the marae hall to hold meetings and camps. Sometimes the schools also hire the marae buildings to hold their school camps.
Finally, the marae is also used to receive and welcome visitors from different countries or from different parts of the country.
